Dr Jason Berry

Dr Jason Berry is the Head of Sport Science at IMG Academy in Florida, USA. IMG Academy is the world’s largest multi-sport training and educational institution with 1200 full-time student-athletes across eight sports. Jason oversees the integration of evidence informed concepts into the applied programs at IMG Academy with a major focus in the following areas; athlete development pathways, athlete management, performance analytics, and performance technology and innovation.

Prior to IMG Academy, Jason held a joint-position as Senior Sport Scientist and Lecturer in Sport Coaching at Victoria University (VU) and the Maribyrnong Sports Academy (MSA) in Melbourne, Australia. MSA is the sporting specialist school of the Victorian state government that supports over 500 student-athletes in 13 sport programs.

Jason has a professional background in the Australian Football League (AFL) as a Football Science Manager, Skill Acquisition Coach, and Consultant to teams including Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles. He has provided consultant and research services to national and state sport organizations including; the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Australian Football League (AFL), Australian Sports Commission (ASC), National Rugby League (NRL), Punjab Institute of Sport (India), and Sport Singapore.

Jason has a strong track record of football research funded by the AFL including the multi-year project titled ‘Development of expert decision-making in Australian football’ that was presented at WCSF 2003 in Lisbon, Portugal. Jason was the joint research leader of a collaborative project involving 10 AFL teams investigating the transition of elite junior athletes into the professional AFL system with specific reference to developmental progressions, training loads and injury status. Most recently, Jason was on the leadership team of a multi-stakeholder project titled ‘Benchmarking Talent Development in the AFL System’ that has produced multiple papers for WCSF 2019.

Jason endeavors to put research-into-practice as a community coach. He has coached across all levels of the development pathway including; Junior coach (Essendon District Football League), Specialist Coach (Maribyrnong Sports Academy), Assistant Coach (Victorian Metro U18 Youth Girls, National Champions); Assistant Coach (Victorian Football League), and Senior Premiership Coach (Ballarat Football League).
